Manny Pacquiao vs Oscar De La Hoya

The Philippines very own WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao has agreed to fight six-time boxing world champion Oscar De La Hoya for a 12-round non-title bout at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds on December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This will surely be the match of the year. Oscar is taller and has a definitive reach but Manny has the heart of a lion. The odds makers already have De La Hoya as an 8-5 favorite. If Pacquiao is able to win and better so if by a knockout then he will surely catapult himself into the realm of becoming legendary. This could be De LA Hoya's last fight. Oscar De La Hoya is probably my favorite boxer having followed his career since his Olympic days. I will be pulling for Pacquiao because this could be the defining moment of his career. Maybe he could get Floyd Mayweather to come out of retirement. For Pacquiao's part he says he believes he is stronger and faster than De La Hoya. Well December 6 it will be one of the largest Pay Per View events for 2008 and could be the saving moment that boxing is looking for. Boxing has lost much ground to MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). But don't worry Filipino fight fans we have a star there as well in the name of Brandon Vera an up and coming star at 205 pounds.

Bigger and Richer than you might think.

The Philippines with 90,450,000 people is the world's 12 largest country. These 90 milion plus produce a Gross Domestic Product that is greater than 160 of the 192 nations in the United Nations in a report released by the United Nations. Among the nations that the Philippines are ahead of in Gross Domestic Product are Belgium, Egypt, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Sweden among others. This should give rise to the fact that by our hard work and perserverance that our nation can grow into an economic giant that gets the respect that we deserve. Remember before World WarII the Philippines economy was considered second to only Japan.

Standard and Poor's better known as S&P the rating agency has revised it's estimates lower for growth in the Asia and Pacific region for the remainder of 2008 and 2009. The bright spot seems to be the Philippines which the report said should hold it's on mainly due to the remittance of overseas workers. Also in an interview by Bloomberg's Bernard Lo a Merrill Lynch analyst cited the Philippines as his top pick for stock market investing.

An Olympian

Toni Rivero is now the only medal hopes for the Philippines. She will be competing this morning in the 57 kg weight class. This weight class is considered one of the most competitive Taekwondo divisions ever in Olympic history. She needs to win four matches to have a chance for a medal. Her opponent is from Serbia and she lost a close fight to her in Europe during an Olympic pre-qualifying match. If she wins she will possibly face the gold medal favorite from Korea if she makes it past her opponent from the UAE. I know this world tells us that winning is everything. I've heard over and over that Micheal Phelps is the greatest Olympian of all time. This may be true if you measure him by medal count but maybe the greatest Olympian was never crowned as a champion. Maybe the greatest was a runner than kept running after the race was all but decided. Or a marathoner that kept running even though nobody still lined the course. Maybe it was the German long jumper who helped Jesse Owens to win the gold medal in the long jump in 1936 while Adolph Hitler looked on. Maybe it's not how they did but what they overcame. I remember in 1996 watching I believe an English track runner by the name of Linford Christie who could not finish the 200m race because of a torn muscle but despite the efforts of officials to stop him wanted to finish anyway. I remember his father ran on the track and helped him to finish. I'm not saying that winning is not important it is always important to do your best and to try and be the best you can be. All you have to do is look at American Lolo Jones who led in the 100m hurdles until she tripped over one of the last hurdles and saw her medal hopes dashed. Her charm positive attitude and the character in which she handled herself was nothing but pure class and that makes her number one in my book. So Toni win or lose just makes us proud and show the world that you will give it all you have and no matter the result show us the character of a champion.

Hi. My name is Wilmer I'm 22 years old college student happy to be studying my two passions which are music and education. As you can tell I dream to one day teach Music hopefully first in a college and later in primary school. The reason for this website is because as a small child growing up with my siblings my father left us and moving to America at a young age I did not have a Filipino as a role model. I grew up idolizing super-heros like Superman, Batman, the Flash and others. I apologize but I even would tell people that I was hispanic because I was ashame of who I was. I have since come to realize I should be proud of who I am that I am special. I have also come to realize that if I can teach others and inspire them to reach for their dreams, to dream big and never let anyone stop them then I can become like my super heros that I idolized growing up. Only I want need a mask because I'm proud of who I am.
